With the introduction of the C 22 MT, the machine factory Berthold HERMLE AG expands its portfolio in the area of 5-axis machining centers with a mill-turn solution designed for process integration. The machine is structurally based on the proven C 22 platform but has been specifically developed for combined milling-turning operations, addressing the increasing demands for precision, flexibility, and cost-effectiveness in machining.

The focus of the development is the complete integration of multiple manufacturing technologies into a single machine. In addition to classic simultaneous 5-axis milling, the C 22 MT also allows for turning operations and the addition of grinding technologies and power skiving. This enables particularly rotationally symmetric component geometries to be efficiently pre-processed in turning mode and subsequently finished with high precision without re-clamping.

This continuous process chain within a single setup directly affects the quality of the components. By eliminating re-clamping and reference errors, the achievable form and positional tolerances increase significantly, while simultaneously enhancing process reliability. In parallel, significant time advantages arise as idle processes are reduced and machining strategies can be optimally combined.

From an economic perspective, the C 22 MT primarily addresses the reduction of unit costs. The consolidation of multiple machining steps leads to shortened throughput times and improved utilization of the resources used. At the same time, the need for additional machine capacity and floor space decreases, as previously separate process steps on different machines are now combined into one system.

This high integration density also supports sustainable manufacturing concepts through reduced energy and material consumption.

Structurally, the C 22 MT is based on a specially developed rotary tilting table of the SRT 320 MT series, which has been consistently designed to meet the requirements of combined machining processes. In addition to a newly designed A-axis housing and optimized bearing of the C-axis, the system features a powerful clamping technology and a water-cooled axis structure for thermal stabilization. These measures ensure high rigidity and positioning accuracy even under turning loads.

In terms of performance, the machine covers a wide range of applications. Workpieces can be machined up to a diameter of 320 mm, with permissible workpiece weights of up to 300 kg in milling mode and up to 150 kg in turning mode. The integrated motor spindle achieves speeds of up to 20,000 rpm, while the table rotation speed in turning mode can reach up to 1,500 rpm depending on the control system. The available clamping torque of 400 Nm also allows for the machining of demanding materials and geometries.

A key feature of the C 22 MT is the consistent integration of clamping and automation solutions. The HERMLE pallet clamping system (PSS) is directly integrated into the machine table and does not require additional clamping plates. This not only reduces setup heights but also improves the overall rigidity of the system. At the same time, the integrated clamping state monitoring allows for high process reliability in automated operation.

Furthermore, the machine is prepared for various automation solutions. In addition to the handling system HS flex, robotic systems such as the RS 05-2, RS 1, or RS 2 can also be adapted in the future. This allows the system to be flexibly used in low-man or fully automated manufacturing environments.

Particular attention has been paid to safety technology in mill-turn technology. The enclosure is equipped with composite safety windows and a specially designed roof section to protect the operator.

The design has also been adapted to the specific requirements of mill-turn machining in the area of peripherals and machine environment. Due to the resulting chip shapes and quantities, a specially designed hinged belt conveyor is used. Additionally, a cooling lubricant system with integrated bed flushing ensures reliable chip removal and stable process conditions. Optimized accessibility and adapted enclosure concepts also ensure good maintenance and service conditions.

With the C 22 MT, HERMLE is strategically positioning itself in the highly competitive market of modern mill-turn centers. By combining high precision, pronounced rigidity, and comprehensive technology integration, the machine particularly addresses applications in aerospace, medical technology, and tool and mold making.

The planned market introduction is scheduled for the period from 2026 to 2027, with initial presentations at international leading trade fairs. This continues HERMLE's technological development course and provides users with a future-proof platform for the increasing demands for flexible and cost-effective complete machining.
