20 years of in-house production

Hufschmied celebrates the twentieth anniversary of its own production in Winterlingen in the Swabian Jura.

Since 2006, the company has been producing its material- and process-specific cutting tools in-house. By having complete control over the entire process chain, Hufschmied can customize every aspect of a tool, including the coating, to tackle cutting challenges faced by customers. Over the past 20 years, many innovations have been implemented at the Hufschmied factory in Winterlingen, significantly improving the machining of materials such as plastics, composite materials, graphite, and ceramics.

A tool grinding operation taken over by Hufschmied with three machines was the starting point of a success story in 2006. Annual production grew from around 2,000 at the beginning to 800,000 tools by 2025. In Winterlingen, standard tools and custom solutions with diameters ranging from 0.05 to 20 mm are produced. Manufacturing capacities have been continuously increased over the years. In 2022, the factory in Sigmaringen was added, and in 2025, another production site in Mexico. Additionally, at the company headquarters in Bobingen near Augsburg, there are also manufacturing capacities alongside the technology center: Here, diamond coating and the production of tools for dental applications take place.

Quality and Innovation

Immediately after the creation of the blank, an important step in quality control occurs in the production process: Each tool receives a QR code (data matrix code), which allows Hufschmied to trace every process step at the end – from the material batch to measurement. The latter is far more detailed than usual incoming inspections and is provided to the user in the form of a final measurement label.

QR codes and tool data can be used by the user for continuous tool management and simulation with a digital twin. Hufschmied is not only innovative in terms of patented tool geometries and coatings. Under the name SonicShark, a novel technique for process-accompanying quality control in machining was developed in 2022. With the help of body sound sensors and a learning AI, the system detects anomalies in production processes, identifies material inhomogeneities, and 'hears' the onset of tool wear.

Process Consulting

About 80 percent of the tools produced by Hufschmied are custom solutions for customers. They are the result of process consultations, in which tools and tool paths were tailored to specific workpieces, materials, and machine tools for companies facing particular challenges. The starting point for process consulting is around 300 standard tool geometries for steel, aluminum, plastics, composites, graphite, non-ferrous metals, and ceramics. Additionally, there are tools for CNC machining methods such as rotary friction welding or ultrasonic cutting.

Sustainability

Hufschmied Cutting Systems has been certified according to ISO 14001:2015 (Environmental Management) since 2022 and has been measuring greenhouse gas emissions in the production of its milling tools since 2024. This supports larger customers in accounting for emissions along their supply chain (Greenhouse Gas Protocol Scope 3). Hufschmied is also making progress in reducing emissions. Approximately 68 tons of CO2 are expected to be saved this year with its own solar system.

Further Improvement

"With our manufacturing, which encompasses the entire process chain, we have the freedom to implement innovations and developments quickly. At the same time, with our seamless quality assurance, we have a maximum level of control," explains Christel Hufschmied, Managing Director of Hufschmied Cutting Systems GmbH. "Our latest improvement: By introducing planning and control software, we not only have full control over what we deliver but also when." Hufschmied has implemented the Manufacturing Execution System HYDRA X and the Advanced Planning and Scheduling System (APS) FEDRA. These systems provide the digital connection between planning and production. They ensure current production data, standardized processes, and a faster response to deviations in the production process. By optimizing the sequence of orders for setup, machine downtimes and changeover times are reduced, productivity and equipment utilization are increased. For Hufschmied's customers, using these systems also means a maximum level of delivery reliability.
