Founded in 1953 in Modena (Italy), Rossi S.p.A. is now part of the Movimenta Group and is active worldwide in more than 90 countries. With a wide product portfolio and over 1,000 employees, Rossi supports thousands of customers from various industries every day.
Technological Transformation as the Key to Success
To meet the increasing demands of the market, Rossi initiated a strategic project to optimize its manufacturing processes. 'Rossi offers one of the world's most comprehensive ranges for industrial power transmission. To maintain this market position in the future, our goal was to shorten cycle times, increase production capacity, and simultaneously improve the quality of our end products,' explains Andrea Raone, workshop manager at Rossi. At the same time, the internal control of production processes was to be made more efficient.
With GROB, Rossi found the right partner for this transformation. GROB's 5-axis machining centers enabled a fundamental advancement of manufacturing processes - especially in gear technology. By using modern methods such as Power Skiving and hobbing, machining steps could be directly integrated into the machine. The result: reduced process steps, shorter lead times, and significantly improved component quality.
'The decisive factor for our decision in favor of GROB was the high quality of the 5-axis universal machining centers. Especially for demanding processes like Power Skiving and external gearing, this precision is crucial,' says Andrea Raone.
A central component of the new manufacturing strategy is the integration of a pallet storage system. This allows different machining steps and various component variants to be flexibly represented on one system. 'The integration of the pallet storage has significantly optimized our production. This has allowed us to efficiently combine different machining steps and manufacture different components flexibly on the same machining center,' says Andrea Raone.
Rossi uses two powerful milling-turning machining centers from GROB: the G750T for large and complex components such as carriers or housing components, and the more compact G550T, which impresses with its dynamics and flexibility. Together, they cover a wide range of parts while maintaining consistently high quality standards.
'The excellent results with the G750T have encouraged us to continue our collaboration with GROB. With the G550T, we now machine smaller components in high quantities and have been able to reduce cycle times by about 20 percent - while also further improving machining quality,' says Leonardo Aguglia, Head of the Technology Department at Rossi.
Strong Partnership for Sustainable Results
The close collaboration with GROB is evident not only in technology but also in daily operations. A key success factor is the rapid and competent technical support. Due to the proximity to the site and a dedicated contact person, reaction times could be minimized, and high machine availability ensured.
'In addition to technology, technical support from GROB was a crucial factor for us. We particularly appreciate that a service technician is available in close proximity to our plant and can respond quickly if needed,' summarizes Andrea Raone.
GROB also demonstrated its solution competence in specific challenges. For example, a technical protection solution was developed for issues with network instability, which reliably protects machines from power failures and significantly increases operational safety.
For GROB, the focus of collaboration is primarily on a partnership-based, trustful cooperation. From planning to implementation to after-sales service, GROB continuously supports its customers and jointly develops tailored solutions.
'Together with Rossi, we have implemented two turnkey manufacturing solutions. In doing so, we were able to demonstrate not only our competence as a machine tool manufacturer but also bring in our experience in process development. The result is significantly more efficient processes and fewer machining steps within a single machining center,' concludes Gianluca Nuzzaci, Area Manager Southern Italy at GROB.
The application case at Rossi illustrates how the combination of innovative technology, solid know-how, and close collaboration leads to measurable successes. The improvements achieved in productivity, quality, and efficiency sustainably strengthen Rossi's competitiveness - and also form the basis for future developments.
