Miyano short lathes from Citizen Machinery Europe GmbH in Esslingen are considered the perfect turning centers for heavy machining. The tireless 'workhorses' combine precision in the micrometer range with robustness and easy maintenance – all while achieving maximum efficiency and longevity. An example is the Miyano ABX model series. With the new Miyano ABX80-THY3, Citizen is raising the bar for the 'flagships' of multitasking bar machining, further expanding the application spectrum of the short lathe thanks to the 80 mm main spindle and adapting the stability of the system to the new machining possibilities with larger ball screw spindles.

Heavy machining with short lathes is a challenging discipline that requires high machine stability, powerful tools, and optimized cutting parameters to economically and reliably process demanding materials. Markus Reiβig, Managing Director of Citizen Machinery Europe GmbH: 'In heavy machining, special rules apply because the materials being processed are often far from standard and require special modalities. Users of our Miyano short lathes have clear advantages:

In addition to the massive machine beds, they have other special constructive advantages, such as hand-scraped guides that are hardly available on the market. They exhibit exceptionally high stiffness and damping capacity, contributing to powerful machining, utmost precision, and extended tool life. All main components of the machine are mounted on the stable cast bed.'

Thanks to the extremely stable and durable construction, Miyano lathes are predestined for high-precision machining results even under difficult cutting conditions – long tool life included. With the Miyano short turning machines of the ABX-THY series, fast and simultaneous machining of even complex workpiece shapes can be easily and efficiently realized. The consistent focus on high-performance machining is evident: The drive for the tools, with a torque of 40 Nm, ensures stable cutting processes.

Thanks to the extensive range of accessories and options, Citizen short turning machines can be adapted to a wide variety of applications: Whether thread cutting with variable pitch, rigid tapping, or polygon machining is required – the ABX series has the corresponding tool fixtures.

Multitasking with the Miyano ABX80-THY3

With the new Miyano ABX80-THY3, Citizen is now expanding the successful ABX model series. The ABX-THY3 is a multitasking lathe with a total of twelve axes and three turrets for 36 driven tools. Thanks to three Y-axes, multiple machining operations can be performed simultaneously in one working step, allowing for complex workpieces to be machined with high precision in a single setup.

The increase in bar passage from originally 64 mm to 80 mm expands the material and application spectrum. This brings several advantages: The user can now also produce larger and more stable components for industries such as mechanical engineering (larger shafts, bushings, coupling elements), automotive (thicker axles, larger housing parts), hydraulics/pneumatics (large valve bodies, piston rods), aerospace (larger precision components).

Markus Reiβig: 'The larger passage opens up opportunities for component manufacturers to take on a broader range of jobs without having to rely on other machines or external processing. This improves competitiveness and opens up new markets.'

The mechanical upgrade of the ball screw spindles from 25 mm to 32 mm increases the bending stiffness, allowing the thicker spindle to handle higher loads without deforming, bending, or 'fluttering' at high speeds. Furthermore, the spindle can transmit higher axial and radial forces with better vibration damping due to the larger diameter, which is particularly advantageous in highly loaded or fast, dynamic applications.

The 19-inch screen allows for user-friendly and precise settings of the FANUC control, and a larger disk along with the ergonomically placed touch panel provide better visibility and comfortable operation.

Markus Reiβig: 'This optimized machine layout of the Miyano ABX80-THY3 is perfectly suited for complex components with high requirements for machining flexibility. This leads to significant time savings in production, higher precision, and better productivity.'
