With the new indexable insert milling grade GC1250, Sandvik Coromant has developed a solution for machining titanium alloys. It combines EthaCore carbide technology with a nanostructured multilayer PVD coating (Physical Vapor Deposition), which increases durability, tool life, and process reliability while reducing environmental impact.

The poor thermal conductivity of titanium leads to extreme heat concentration at the cutting edge. This increases the risk of rapid wear, chipping, and unexpected breakage of the insert. GC1250 addresses these challenges with a completely new material architecture: it combines the patented EthaCore carbide platform with the Nano-Multilayer PVD coating technology Zertivo.

The customer benefit of this innovation is based on three pillars: innovation, performance, and sustainability. The resilient substrate adapts to changing thermal and mechanical stresses. This allows for better prediction of tool life, reduces unexpected breakages, and minimizes production downtimes.

"GC1250 sets new standards for resilience and predictable performance when milling titanium," states Wayne Mason, Global Product Application Manager for grades at Sandvik Coromant. "By reducing unexpected insert breakages and interruptions, GC1250 can help customers increase machine utilization and achieve more cost-effective machining."

In addition, the new grade helps customers achieve their sustainability goals. Compared to competing products from leading suppliers that use carbide based on ruthenium in this application area, EthaCore significantly reduces the product's CO₂ footprint.

"Performance and sustainability must increasingly go hand in hand," adds Mason. "GC1250 provides manufacturing companies with a solution that enables safe and productive titanium machining while also helping to reduce the CO₂ footprint of their tools."

The new milling grade GC1250 is optimized for roughing to semi-finishing of titanium alloys. It is designed for wet machining and is available for various CoroMill cutters, including corner, face, slot, high-feed, and profile mills.

With the introduction of the grade GC1250, the 1200 series is now complete. Customers gain access to a comprehensive portfolio that covers all important material groups and can benefit from the latest substrate and coating technologies for a variety of machining applications.
