How can production data be utilized securely, efficiently, and in real-time – from the sensor to the cloud? Answers to this question will be provided by the Fraunhofer Cluster of Excellence Cognitive Internet Technologies CCIT at EMO Hannover 2025. Together with its member institutes Fraunhofer IWU, Fraunhofer IAIS, Fraunhofer IMS, and Fraunhofer IIS, the cluster will present numerous exhibits from the research focus Edge Cloud Continuum (ECC) at booth B18 in Hall 6. The ECC lays the foundation for a seamless connection between edge computing and cloud computing, thus enabling efficient, secure, and sovereign processing and storage of data in distributed networks and data ecosystems. The Fraunhofer CCIT supports the digital value chain of industrial companies comprehensively as a neutral partner with scientific expertise and technological solution competence.
At the multimedia wall at the Fraunhofer booth, visitors will get an interactive insight into the 'Edge Cloud Continuum for Production' (ECC4P) as a comprehensive monitoring system based on an edge-cloud infrastructure for intelligent, secure, and connected production. ECC4P is specifically aimed at automated manufacturing processes such as machining (e.g., milling, drilling, gear grinding) and forming processes.
The solution is flexibly applicable – either as a comprehensive system architecture or modularly in a building block principle, allowing seamless integration into existing production structures.
Further exhibits on-site
In addition to ECC4P, other exhibits impressively demonstrate the potential of the Edge Cloud Continuum as a future-proof cloud solution for various application fields. The highly sensitive, rotating measurement system smartGRIND enables real-time monitoring of the condition of grinding tools – with the aim of improving product quality and significantly reducing tool costs.
The new generation of the intelligent tool holder smartTOOL enables precise and reliable monitoring, documentation, and automation of machining processes. The basis for this is the capture of sensitive measurement signals through a novel combination of integrated sensors and innovative antenna design. Changes to the tool and workpiece can be detected at high frequency and directly during processing. Thanks to the patented energy harvesting technology, the smartTOOL operates wirelessly and is completely energy-autonomous.
The Edge AI platform presented at the booth serves as a central link between cloud and edge and enables the automated development of compact, powerful AI models – optimized for hardware-specific use down to the sensor level. This privacy-friendly approach allows existing AI models from the cloud to be seamlessly utilized on energy-efficient, battery-operated, or mobile devices.
