Sandvik Coromant presents CoroTurn PI, a new generation of internal turning tools. These combine precise chip breaking, multidirectional turning, and a unique tool holder design to achieve significant productivity increases. The tool concept is designed for high process reliability and is ideal for demanding machining of ISO P, ISO M, and ISO K materials.
Machining internal contours, such as holes in shafts, gear teeth, or connecting pieces, is associated with various challenges. Vibrations, deformations, and built-up edge formation are common problems that can negatively impact productivity and quality. To address these challenges, CoroTurn PI relies on a highly precise chip breaker as well as multiple coolant configurations and supplies for roughing and finishing processes in a single tool. This ensures high-quality results and efficiency in demanding internal turning applications.
"This tool is all about process reliability," emphasizes Sascha Bolling, Global Product Manager at Sandvik Coromant. "While internal turning is complex, a specially designed tool like CoroTurn PI not only prevents machining problems but also increases productivity, output, and cost efficiency."
The centerpiece of CoroTurn PI is a tool holder design with two separate insert seats: one for roughing and one for finishing. This reduces the need for tool changes, shortens lead times, and increases production performance. "We saw the opportunity to significantly enhance efficiency through the design with two insert seats," explains Åke Nilsson, Global Product Application Specialist at Sandvik Coromant. "I know of no other turning tool with this functionality and capability."
Each insert for roughing has eight cutting edges. This increases tool life and reduces costs. CoroTurn PI also utilizes the patented PrimeTurning™ method, which provides small adjustment angles and multidirectional turning for flexibility and control. The small adjustment angles, combined with the precise chip breaker, enable safe chip removal despite the constraints of internal contours. For further performance optimization, the tool features customizable coolant supply options specifically tailored for components with blind or through holes. The result is better chip control, more uniform machining, and higher reliability.
