TMQS uses the TPC M from LMT Tools to machine a workpiece made of titanium 3.7165. The raw dimension of 60 x 60 x 255 mm is reduced to a wall thickness of 2 mm through roughing. Previously, the company worked with trochoidal mills, but switching to the TPC M has now resulted in a significant performance leap: Processing time has been halved, while tool life (235 min) and material removal rate (approx. 40 mm³/min) have doubled. The result: higher productivity, lower piece costs, and more stable processes. 'The TPC mills from LMT Tools are a real game changer for us,' emphasizes Nico Brandt, CEO of TMQS. 'We now manufacture complex titanium components faster, more economically, and with significantly higher process reliability.'
Optimized tool geometry and excellent chip removal
The TPC M was specifically developed by LMT Tools for trochoidal milling in titanium and is precisely tailored to the process-specific requirements. The high-performance tools feature multiple cutting edges, several chip breakers with tangential transition, and a particularly wear-resistant cutting edge. The chip breakers ensure optimal chip removal and significant vibration reduction, positively impacting tool life. The cutting edges are located along the entire length of the tool and are almost completely submerged in the workpiece. This allows for very large depth of cuts to be achieved. In the application at TMQS, a depth of cut of 35 mm was realized with the TPC M - with a cutting length of 38 mm (tool diameter: 12 mm). A special cutting geometry with defined edge preparation and the latest coating enables high cutting speeds and guarantees maximum machining performance and feed rates. Additionally, the 2 mm longer cutting edge is advantageous. This allows the TPC M to be resharpened multiple times without losing the maximum depth of cut.
Excellent trochoidal milling in a variety of materials
'The application case at TMQS impressively illustrates the outstanding performance of our HPC mills. The powerful tools achieve the best milling results in any material and elevate trochoidal milling to a new level,' summarizes Carsten Wegner, Technical Consulting and Sales at LMT Tools, pinpointing the advantages. In addition to the TPC M for titanium, versions with cutting lengths of 3 x Ø and 5 x Ø for cast (ISO-K), steel and stainless steel (ISO-M), as well as high-temperature-resistant steels or superalloys are available.
