Industrial engraving with marking and embossing tools is indispensable in manufacturing: Whether marking safety-relevant assemblies for traceability, numbering products, adding the company logo or production date, or enhancing surfaces with ornaments – the quality of marking and embossing tools quickly separates the wheat from the chaff in the market, especially regarding wear, application flexibility, and portfolio diversity. Component manufacturers are on the safe side with precision tool manufacturers.

Hommel+Keller from Aldingen. The company develops and creates a wide range of marking and embossing tools within the zeus engraving technology – often not off-the-shelf, but tailored solutions for customer-specific requirements – optimally adjusted in material, dimensions, and properties to the component to be processed.

Marking and embossing tools from Hommel+Keller are used in many industrial sectors to apply permanent markings even in delicate and complex structures on small components. The areas of application are as diverse as the materials to be processed. In mechanical engineering, the automotive industry, or aerospace, for example, they are used for the permanent marking of safety-critical components, for embossed nameplates, serial numbers, logos, or barcodes for traceability and quality assurance. In electronics and medical technology, they are used to mark components, housings, or surgical instruments for clear identification. The packaging industry also offers a variety of application areas. High-quality engravings for trophies, signs, jewelry, or gifts in advertising and design can also be produced with them.

The zeus marking and embossing tools create markings that remain clearly visible even after mechanical stress (e.g., sandblasting, coating). They are mechanically very durable, and especially in harsh environments (heat, chemicals, abrasion), the markings remain highly legible. Some materials, such as very hard metals, can be marked better with zeus tools from Hommel+Keller than with other methods.

Long tool life thanks to superior material hardening

Sigmund Grimm, CEO of Hommel+Keller Precision Tools GmbH: "Especially in automated manufacturing processes, high-quality marking and embossing tools are crucial to achieve consistently precise results. A key quality criterion for this is our program of state-of-the-art heat treatment. Thanks to our many years of in-house expertise in hardening, such as implementation, equipment, and post-treatment, as well as the high process reliability in the workflow, we have established a significant quality advantage in the market. Thus, we leave hardly any wishes unfulfilled regarding material properties and ensure above-average durability of our products."

Wide-ranging product portfolio

Hommel+Keller offers a wide product portfolio of marking and embossing tools for both manual and machine use. For example, letter rolls for marking or labeling series of turned parts with the same diameter, same lettering, and very large, recurring quantities. Sigmund Grimm: "Even delicate structures down to the micro level are possible. For example, with a manufacturer of electrical connectors for aerospace technology.

There, the individual poles of the connectors with diameters of about 1 mm are marked with Morse code as part of traceability. This is not visible to the naked eye. Hommel+Keller manufactures the letter roll to emboss these Morse codes onto these metal pins."

For turned parts with different diameters and constantly changing marking needs, letter segments with flexibly interchangeable text and character blocks are used. A particular advantage of marking with letter segments is the flexibility to always change the production process; for example, with changing batch or item numbers or logos. Thus, the component manufacturer can variably exchange only the segments as needed without having to use a new letter roll directly.

While letter rolls are always custom-made, Hommel+Keller also offers standard segments such as letters (A-Z), numbers (0-9), and some special characters that are quickly available from stock, allowing customers to assemble their letter segment themselves.

The letter rolls and letter segments are used in lathes via standardized holders. Sigmund Grimm: "In series production with high quality requirements, for example, zeus letter rolls and letter segments ensure constant, uniform quality. An example is the marking of turned parts with RFID codes. Here, our marking and embossing tools represent a significantly better alternative to laser marking. Because laser markings can fade or smear – the embossing with our letter roll is of infinite duration."

Customer-specific embossing and stamping

100 percent customer individuality is guaranteed by zeus embossing and stamping tools. They are always made specifically according to the specifications, such as customer drawings. All embossing and stamping tools give packaging or products made of paper, cardboard, leather, or textiles a refined finish.
Embossing rolls and embossing rollers are used, for example, in the packaging industry to specifically change surfaces – visibly and tangibly. Using the embossing tools, a pattern, text, logo, or symbol is pressed into or raised on the packaging material.

Another area of embossing tools includes stamps such as hand stamps for embossing various materials, for marking, numbering, or decorating. Machine stamps for embossing all kinds of materials are equipped at the end of the shank with a pin or thread for the respective machine, in contrast to hand stamps. Segment stamps are offered by Hommel+Keller for marking with variable segments that can be combined and supplemented as needed.

Sigmund Grimm: "Our zeus marking and embossing tools are as universal as possible, but also as specific as necessary when needed. For universal applications, such as marking complex surfaces, we also design specially adapted custom solutions – always with the aim of significantly reducing unit costs. Furthermore, we also personally support our customers and partners with our technological expertise."
