Lack of transparency in tool management leads to time losses due to searching and multiple provisioning, costs due to inefficient inventory management with tool overstock or premature tool changes, and in the worst case, downtime due to missing or faulty data. It's high time for modernization: OPEN MIND experts for digital processes based on CAM and MES develop and implement a highly efficient digital tool management system in five steps.
Analysis of the current state
In the first step, existing processes and systems are analyzed. For example, it is examined which data on tools is available or how tool inventory management and setup processes are organized. Improvement potentials are identified and a detailed roadmap for system implementation is developed, including the definition of system structure and assignment of responsibilities.
Standardization of data in the tool database
The standardization of data in the tool database of hyperMILL or another CAM system is a necessary prerequisite for error-avoiding efficient processes. A dedicated workshop supports this.
System integration
In a development environment, all modules of the tool management system are prepared, configured, and tested. The interface to hyperMILL is standard and immediately usable; all other interfaces, such as those to machines and presetting devices, are configured and tested. Users receive training.
Commissioning and coaching
The combination of planned commissioning and practical coaching enables a smooth start with the new tool management system. The data-leading system is the tool database of the CAM solution. With the Hummingbird module 'Tool Logistics', for example, remaining times or tool measurement as well as the storage and logistics of tools and holders are organized. Feedback from machine operators can also be collected when deviations in cutting values or service times occur in practice.
Check results
After an initial usage phase, it is checked whether the processes were implemented as planned. A measurable success is, for example, if the variety of tools on the shop floor has been reduced. The integration of additional systems can now also be checked, for example, by connecting tool cabinets or direct communication between machine and system via OPC UA. The expansion towards intelligent control through bidirectional communication between Hummingbird and the machines is another possible step for consistently digital and automated processes and opens the option to introduce further components of the modular Hummingbird-MES.
The foundation of consistent tool management is precise and maintained data. With the hyperMILL tool database in combination with the TOOL Builder, users have the ideal conditions available. Thanks to the integrated synchronization solution, the data is consistently and reliably usable directly in Hummingbird at any time without additional interfaces.
Comprehensive solution
'The actual management of the tool inventory then takes place completely in Hummingbird,' explains Maximilian Waizenegger, Director of Business Development at OPEN MIND Technologies AG. 'Our specialists support the maintenance of the database and the implementation of manufacturing processes. This creates a comprehensive solution from which our customers benefit sustainably. Everything from a single source!'
