With 150 registered guests, the Technology Day on June 18, 2026, was well received at Hufschmied Zerspanungssysteme GmbH. High-profile speakers, important partner companies, and machining examples were the cornerstones of an event that offered professional expertise in a warm, family-like atmosphere.
Hufschmied employees provided insights into their innovation and development process in a relaxed 'panel discussion'. They discussed an upcoming graphite machining tool that participants of the Technology Day were the first to see in action. In addition to material topics and precision machining, the aerospace industry contributed interesting discussion material.
The fact that the aerospace industry, represented by speakers Andreas Gundel from bavAIRia e. V. and Norbert Peer from AIRBUS Infrastructures, was a topic at the Hufschmied Technology Day is no coincidence. As Sven Blanck, Managing Director of the MAI-Carbon Cluster at Composites United e. V., emphasized, the aerospace industry has replaced the automotive industry as the driver of fiber composite development and application. An example of current material development was presented by Tarun Magu and Erich Fries from ExxonMobil:
The Proxxima polyolefin for High-Pressure Resin Transfer Molding (HP-RTM) is characterized by low viscosity and fast curing. An example of the complex shapes that can be achieved with it was a fiberglass battery tray. This was also the subject of the first machining demonstration. The Hufschmied tool T-REX with drill tip machined the material without delamination.
Flexible, intelligent production methods
Prof. Dr.-Ing. Michael Kupke, Director of the Institute for Construction Methods and Structural Technology at the German Aerospace Center (DLR), moderated the Hufschmied Aerospace Day last year. This time, he provided insights into the current 'Flextelligent' process development of his institute. The focus is on making the use of robots in the production of large CFRP structural parts more efficient. Marco Gruber, Director Applications & Process Engineering at KraussMaffei, presented an interesting saving of process steps: multi-component injection molding with the application of polyurethane coating during the process. This way, vehicle parts can be coated cost-effectively.
Theme block Precision
Jan-Christoph Bruhn, Head of Sales EMEA at KUKA, presented the latest advances in the automation of processes related to friction welding. Friction Stir Welding (FSW) is a process with many advantages, for which Hufschmied also contributes tools. In the live machining demonstrations of the Precision theme block, a copper and a graphite electrode were created. The latter was finished with a tool that Hufschmied will present shortly. Four employees from sales, application technology, and development guided the audience through the innovation process, starting from the optimization potential of a customer and economic considerations to the basic form and the challenges of tool design to coating.
Outlook and reflections at the end
The motto of the event was 'Between Stability and Change'. The final presentation came from Bernd Beschorner, CCO of MT Aerospace. Using the high demand for satellites, plans for lunar colonization, and the prerequisites for it, he illustrated the development towards the industrialization of the industry. Given his company's market penetration with rocket parts, Beschorner was able to share the motto with the audience: 'The road to the moon leads through Augsburg.'
As a humorous conclusion, Mathis Toppmöller, Head of Strategy, Business Development & Product Innovation at Hufschmied Zerspanungssysteme, interviewed long-serving sales employees Nabil Khairallah and Ludwig Krammer about the beginnings of international expansion.
