Flexible finishing milling system for smooth surfaces

A new finishing mill from Seco enables precise, simple, and cost-effective finishing operations with a single system. The system achieves its flexibility thanks to three milling concepts and two insert types used with cast materials, unalloyed and alloyed steels, as well as hardened steels.

Setting up finishing tools is often time-consuming. Especially when a high surface quality is to be achieved, even small setup errors can lead to costly rework or scrap. The finishing milling system .38 / SNFX1204 from Seco is an easy-to-use solution that ensures smooth, flawless surfaces and can be flexibly adapted to the respective finishing process.

Easy setup or precise fine adjustment

The .38 system includes three milling body concepts in application-specific requirements and performance levels. The version R220.38-xxxx-SN12-xxSA with fixed, precise insert seats impresses with quick tool setup and easy handling. The angled indexable insert screws ensure optimal self-centering of the indexable inserts and a runout accuracy of 4 – 15 µm.

The version R220.38-xxxx-SN12-xxHSA with fully adjustable insert seats has been specifically developed for demanding applications and particularly high surface quality. A newly developed adjusting element for fine adjustment allows for precise, safe, and quick setting of the runout to 0 – 2 µm. This leads to both higher tool life and an increase in feed rate.

The hybrid version R220.38-xxxx-SN12-xxCSA is particularly suitable for applications with significant burr formation or limited workpiece stability. It combines fixed and adjustable insert seats. Axially protruding cassettes remove burrs and reduce cutting pressure. The adjustment can be material- and application-specific but is not mandatory. All three milling body concepts feature an integrated coolant supply.

A solution for all finishing requirements

For even more precise adjustment and simple, economical machining, the finishing mills .38 can be configured with two different indexable insert types. The indexable insert SNFX120408PZ has a cutting angle of 88° and is particularly suitable for wall and contour-close applications. SNFX1204ZZ has a cutting angle of 27°, allowing for high displacement for machining open surfaces and reducing notch wear at a constant cutting depth.

Tobias Jakobi, Global Product Manager Face Milling at Seco, summarizes: “The .38 finishing milling system has been developed for equally powerful and simple, reliable finishing. With this flexible and highly precise solution, users meet a variety of requirements that previously necessitated the use of adjustable tools. The system is ideally suited for applications in general mechanical engineering, commercial vehicle and agricultural machinery manufacturing, as well as in the automotive industry.”
