Unstable machining processes plague many machinists when grooves need to be cut into steel, stainless steel, cast materials, or aluminum. That's where the MaxiMill – Slot-SNHX system with its soft-cutting face mills comes in handy: Thanks to its wide product range of holders and indexable inserts, it optimally covers cutting widths from 6 to 16mm and diameters from 50 – 200mm, ensuring cost-optimized machining.

Versatility and precision characterize the MaxiMill – Slot-SNHX. For example, the front-side interference-free contours and axial clearance ensure smooth machining even in hard-to-reach places. Thanks to the precision-ground indexable inserts, a flat groove bottom is achieved, which ensures perfect surfaces from the very first cut. Additionally, the system is equipped with an internal coolant supply up to a diameter of 200mm, which successfully prevents chip jamming and further increases efficiency. 'We believe that soft cuts and stable face mills should not exclude each other: The MaxiMill – Slot-SNHX performs excellently in steels, cast iron, and aluminum, effectively navigating any interference contour!' says Robert Frei, product manager at CERATIZIT.

Universal connection guaranteed

When grooves need to be cut into steel, stainless steel, cast materials, or aluminum, soft-cutting face mills like the MaxiMill – Slot-SNHX system from CERATIZIT are the optimal solution. Thanks to its wide product range of holders and indexable inserts, it optimally covers cutting widths from 6 to 16mm and diameters from 50 – 200mm, ensuring cost-optimized machining. The MaxiMill – Slot-SNHX is offered in three holder variants to provide as universal a connection as possible. As a modular face mill, the face mill diameters range from 80mm to 200mm, all with internal coolant supply. The cutting widths (CW) will be available in 6mm, 8mm, 10mm, 12mm, 14mm, and 16mm. A screw-in face mill with internal coolant supply will be offered in diameters of 50mm, 63mm, and 80mm as well as cutting widths of 6mm and 8mm.

Customers of CERATIZIT receive the face mill with cylindrical shank and internal coolant supply in diameters of 50mm, 63mm, 80mm, and 100mm as well as cutting widths (CW) of 6mm and 8mm.

The indexable inserts of the MaxiMill – Slot-SNHX are precision-ground and suitable for application areas P, M, and K. At market launch, they are available with a corner radius of 0.8mm. The indexable insert has a 3° axial installation position in the face mill, which ensures good clearance and even allows for back-side machining. To prevent operational errors when equipping with the corresponding indexable inserts, the holders are clearly labeled at the insert seats, and there are clear markings for right and left indexable inserts.

That the MaxiMill – Slot-SNHX tools also perform well compared to the competition is demonstrated by tests in back-side machining of spheroidal cast iron. While the competitor managed to process 200 parts with a holder tool of 160mm diameter and six effective cutting edges (depth of cut: 3mm, width of cut: 42mm), the CERATIZIT face mill significantly outperformed: 'Our solution with an effective tooth count of 5 increases the quantity to a remarkable 600 pieces.',

Additionally, the user benefits from better handling due to the large indexable insert clamping screw and reduced setup effort with fewer indexable inserts than the competitor,' adds Robert Frei.

Effectively minimizing vibrations

When vibrations in the process cannot be easily resolved, special measures must be taken. The combination of MaxiMill – Slot-SNHX tools and a vibration-damped grooving modular face mill holder provides enormous advantages. Thanks to a special damping mechanism in the body of the vibration-damped grooving modular face mill holder, vibrations generated during the process are effectively minimized. Robert Frei adds: 'Especially with long overhangs, this feature significantly improves surface quality and increases productivity, as users can confidently increase either the cutting speed or the feed rate.'
