To perfectly integrate the tool system at SUSA, SUSA, TCM Germany, and Tungaloy-NTK worked hand in hand.

"How does one manage to not only keep up in a demanding industry like the automotive sector but always stay one step ahead?" This question is answered by SUSA S. Sauer GmbH & Co. KG from Heidenau near Dresden with their passion for innovation and collaborative partnerships. The medium-sized family business relies on Tungaloy's AddMultiTurn tool system – a decision that has significantly improved production. With support from Tungaloy-NTK Germany, the multifunctional tool was perfectly integrated into existing processes and further developed with TCM Germany. This now offers crucial advantages for flexibility, quality, and productivity.

"Turning with passion" – this is the motto of the experts at SUSA S. Sauer GmbH & Co. KG, with which they strive for excellence every day. The second-generation family business from Heidenau manufactures milling and turning parts with the highest precision. Numerous certifications (ISO 9001:2015, IATF 16949:2016, ISO 14001:2015, ISO 50001:2018, Tisax) ensure efficient processes and top quality. On a total production area of around 14,000 square meters with a machine park of more than 100 systems and 200 qualified and experienced professionals, both simple components and complex workpieces with intricate contours as well as small assemblies are produced. The company's focus is on medium and large series for all industries including automotive, electrical engineering, hydraulics, and mechanical engineering.

Turning with passion – SUSA S. Sauer GmbH & Co. KG from Heidenau near Dresden is an expert in milling and turning parts with the highest precision (l. to r.): Lars Gerlach, plant manager, Volkmar Sauer, technical managing director, and Simone Sauer, commercial managing director.

To find the best possible solution for each application and maintain productivity at a high level, SUSA also works closely with suppliers and partners at the production level. "Open communication and collaborative partnerships are at the center of our work. We want partners by our side who not only provide technical solutions but also speak our language, like Tungaloy-NTK Germany and TCM Germany. Together, we find the right solution for every challenge," says Lars Gerlach, plant manager at SUSA S. Sauer GmbH & Co. KG.

Technology that convinces

Thus, for the processing of a new precision part for the automotive sector, the AddMultiTurn from Tungaloy came into discussion as a new technology. "Our goal is to provide the customer with the best possible support. We offer practical improvement suggestions that help optimize production," says Christian Junger, technical consultant and sales representative at Tungaloy-NTK Germany. "In the use of AddMultiTurn, we saw great potential for SUSA." The specialists from Tungaloy-NTK presented the tool system on-site at SUSA in Heidenau and were able to convince the turning experts at SUSA of the system's advantages.

Intensive exchange for the best possible tool use (l. to r.): Christoph Altmann, sales manager at TCM Germany, Robert Bernhardt, application technician at Tungaloy-NTK Germany, and Michael Göbel, tool expert at TCM Germany.

Multifunctional and adaptable – AddMultiTurn fulfills user dreams for maximum versatility, as the multitool combines: forward turning (finishing), backward turning (roughing with high feed), profiling, and flat turning in a single tool. This is made possible by the combination of a unique Y-PRISM-Safe-Lock system and innovative insert geometries. The Y-PRISM-Safe-Lock system ensures excellent clamping stability in all applications.

The innovative insert geometry offers machinists an increase in versatility, cost-effectiveness, and productivity.

Strong partnership for strong results

Versatile: The multitool combines forward turning (finishing), backward turning (roughing with high feed), profiling, and flat turning in a single tool.

To perfectly integrate the tool system into production processes and adapt it to SUSA's requirements, SUSA and Tungaloy-NTK worked hand in hand with TCM Germany. TCM is one of the leading service providers in tool management. As a "Total Solution Provider" and independent expert, TCM not only supports manufacturing companies in the supply and maintenance of cutting tools but also advises them on the entire cutting process.

This technology-oriented tool management guarantees long-term optimization potentials in cutting manufacturing and ensures customers like SUSA sustainable competitiveness. TCM stands for "Cutting Edge Productivity" – because at the cutting edge, the customer earns their money. "Our mission is to make our customers more competitive in cutting manufacturing. Everything we do is aimed at that," explains Christoph Altmann, sales manager at TCM Germany.

The long-standing partnership between SUSA, TCM, and Tungaloy-NTK ensures flexibility, quality, and productivity for SUSA's customers.

As a partner of SUSA, TCM knows the production processes there very well, and based on that, a tailored development of the tool strategy took place. Christoph Altmann: "With the trio of SUSA, TCM, and Tungaloy-NTK, we have created real added value together." Christian Junger also highlights the good collaboration:

"TCM is close to the customer and deeply involved in the processes. This expertise ensures the best support for SUSA. Thanks to the close coordination of all parties involved, we were able to ensure that our tool can unleash its full potential."

Advantage through flexibility and process reliability

AddMultiTurn is currently the star in rough machining at Heidenau. Especially the six-edged indexable inserts have proven themselves at SUSA. They are ideal for roughing and finishing applications and ensure higher machining efficiency thanks to their smaller engagement angle and thin chips. The tool life of the inserts is significantly increased by the even distribution of load and heat over a longer cutting edge length.

"The AddMultiTurn has fully convinced us with its excellent chip removal," explains Lars Gerlach. "We were able to not only reduce machining times but also significantly improve the process reliability and stability of our production. This is crucial to consistently deliver constant results with consistently high quality to our demanding customers."

Another unbeatable advantage of the AddMultiTurn system for SUSA lies in its versatility. "As a contract manufacturer with a wide range of components, SUSA relies on efficient and flexible tools. Here, AddMultiTurn stands out clearly from other tool systems and opens up great potential to standardize and streamline processes, as not many different tools need to be used for different applications," says Christoph Altmann.

A win for the machine park and customers

Lars Gerlach confirms, "We not only save tool costs with the AddMultiTurn, but also gain valuable time to respond quickly to customer inquiries." SUSA is now always checking during the production of new components whether the multifunctionality of the AddMultiTurn can bring additional advantages for production. "With this tool system, we have found a solution that allows us standardized processes and maximum flexibility. A real benefit for our machine park and our customers," concludes the statement from Heidenau near Dresden.
