In 70 countries, leading companies in the automotive industry, chemical industry, aerospace, medical technology, and tool and mold making rely on HORN's precision tools to secure their success. The USA is one of the most important markets for the machining industry and is gaining increasing significance. In the pursuit of perfection and improved service, HORN USA has now integrated a state-of-the-art coating line with two CC800 HiPIMS into its production process. This allows HORN to quickly supply US customers with tailored solutions for their individual requirements. The trust built over years of collaboration between HORN and CemeCon in Europe and North America paved the way for a seamless transition to in-house coating at HORN USA.
Precision tools for demanding machining operations in the highest quality and with short delivery times: What others fail at is the hallmark of HORN. To ensure this worldwide, powerful productions with cutting-edge technology are required around the globe – especially in key markets like the USA. At the headquarters in Tübingen (Germany), CemeCon's unique HiPIMS technology has long been one of the cornerstones of HORN's success.
Since 2004, HORN USA has had its precision tools coated by the experts at CemeCon, Inc. Now, the manufacturing in Franklin was to be expanded and enhanced with its own coating expertise to quickly and efficiently 'support' the US market with fully optimized products.
The perfect combination for in-house coating
We realized: If we switch to our own coating production, we must produce the same coatings as CemeCon from day one. We needed to produce the same quality as before with CemeCon's coating service and be able to simply duplicate the new products from Tübingen in the USA. This means we needed the same technological capabilities as in Germany. And the training to not only integrate the coating technology into US manufacturing but also to fully exploit its potential,” said Chad King, General Manager at HORN USA.
HORN found a solution with its long-standing partner CemeCon. HORN invested in a turnkey coating line – consisting of two HiPIMS coating systems, substrate pre- and post-treatment, and all necessary peripheral equipment – with technology 'made in Germany' and training 'made in the USA'. Chad King added: 'With CemeCon as our technology partner, we received the all-inclusive turnkey package: first, the technical equipment, and second, the full customer service package with knowledge transfer, training of our employees, and support from the coating experts in Horseheads in collaboration with our German colleagues. This combination is perfect and allows us to do an outstanding job!'
Unique knowledge transfer ensures a smooth entry
To integrate an in-house coating line smoothly into production, CemeCon has a decisive advantage: The experts use the same technology in their coating service every day – in all coating centers around the globe. Therefore, the team at CemeCon, Inc. knows the coating and peripheral equipment, processes, and workflows down to the smallest detail and can optimally support its customers. 'At HORN, there is also a decades-long partnership with CemeCon – both here in the USA and in Germany. So we know the requirements and the high-end quality level of HORN very well,' said Ryan Lake, Sales Manager at CemeCon, Inc.
Operating the HiPIMS coating system is self-explanatory; the key to the success of in-house coating production lies in understanding the workflows and the entire process from start to finish. CemeCon has optimized the processes over the years so that they are easy to learn and understand. 'During training in our coating center in Horseheads or at the customer's site, we share our knowledge and experiences. The training for customers and our own employees is identical. We know from our own experience that our training quickly imparts the know-how to successfully master the coating process. And if there are still questions, we continuously support our customers whenever necessary,' said Eli Roberts, Technical Manager at CemeCon, Inc.
Seamlessly connected to quality
Chad King: 'A little over a year ago, we revolutionized our coating manufacturing in Franklin thanks to our dynamic partnership with CemeCon. Thanks to the combination of cutting-edge technology, unique process knowledge, and coordinated training, we successfully achieved a smooth transition to in-house coating. From day one, we delivered excellent quality. We were able to develop our own coatings and tailor them precisely to our needs.'
