In Altdorf, Baden-Württemberg, the company Wirth Tonmaschinenbau manufactures exclusive turntables by hand. Karl Wirth is a tinkerer and perfectionist. His mass drive systems are made from solid aluminum. CNC machines ensure micrometer-precise precision. He and his team assemble 25 individual parts, each polished to a high gloss, into a high-end device. Not only an optical masterpiece but above all acoustically. The craftsmanship shows the elaborate production of the individual parts, the secrets behind the smooth operation and warm sound of the turntable: the cast bearing, for example, which allows the ten-kilogram platter to rotate gently, or the installation of precision balls for the smooth movement of the tonearm. Karl Wirth has over 20 years of experience in turntable construction and still prefers to rely on measurable insights. The finished pieces are computer-tested. However, the ultimate test remains the human ear, as Karl Wirth has not lost his fascination for analog sound over the years.
