Precision-sintered milling cutting insert reduces costs

The carbide tool manufacturer Paul Horn GmbH has developed a highly precise and economical solution for a range of milling applications with the new milling system DA65.

Paul Horn GmbH expands the DA milling system for corner, face, and plunge milling. With the DA65 variant, the system offers a larger cutting insert compared to the existing DA62. This allows for higher axial cutting depths during the process. Horn relies on a six-edged indexable insert. The cutting insert can be used on both sides and has three axial and radial cutting edges on each side. A large core cross-section with maximum cutting edge length is the striking feature of the precision-sintered cutting insert in trigon shape. Despite a negative insert angle, the cutting edge design results in a positive cutting geometry, leading to a smooth cut. The DA65 system can be used as a roughing and finishing system. In the tests conducted, the milling system achieved surface finishes that meet market requirements. By selecting the axial and radial angles, a lower torque and reduced lateral load on the spindle compared to previous systems have been demonstrated. This allows the system to be used on less powerful machines with unstable environmental conditions.

Another advantage of the chosen axial angle is the good chip removal, especially in helical plunge operations.

The cutting edge shape generates an exact 90° corner angle with a maximum cutting depth of 7 mm. The patented indexable inserts are available with corner radii of 0.8 mm and 1.2 mm. The proven carbide substrate SA4B is used. This substrate is suitable as an all-rounder for milling steel, stainless steel, cast iron, and aluminum. Furthermore, the cutting inserts are also available in the grades SC6A and IG6B for use in other material groups.

The basic bodies are available as shank mills in diameters of 32 mm and 40 mm. In these variants, the milling tools are equipped with two or three cutting inserts. As face mills, the tools are available in cutting circles of 50 mm, 63 mm, 80 mm, and 100 mm. The number of teeth varies depending on the diameter: four, five, seven, nine, and eleven. All basic bodies feature targeted internal cooling at the cutting point.
