Scalable Approach for the Future of Metal Processing

At EMO, the Fraunhofer Cluster of Excellence Cognitive Internet Technologies CCIT demonstrates the possibilities of a sovereign digital infrastructure for production processes at the joint stand with its member institutes Fraunhofer IWU, Fraunhofer IAIS, Fraunhofer IMS, and Fraunhofer IIS.

The Edge Cloud Continuum (ECC) connects IoT technologies, secure data spaces, and machine learning methods into a future-proof cloud system for various application areas. With several exhibits, Fraunhofer CCIT shows the possibilities that the interplay of production technologies with an intelligent digital infrastructure offers.

Digital transformation fundamentally changes industrial production. Connected machines, AI-driven processes, and data-based business models open up new opportunities. To leverage them, a secure and sovereign digital infrastructure is required. The Fraunhofer Cluster of Excellence Cognitive Internet Technologies CCIT develops key technologies such as secure data spaces, trustworthy edge cloud architectures, and open-source solutions for the manufacturing industry.

Michael Fritz, head of the Fraunhofer CCIT office, emphasizes: 'There are enormous development potentials in the production sector. Companies could make their manufacturing processes more flexible, efficient, and sustainable through secure data exchange and intelligent data utilization. The scalable approach opens up new opportunities for companies, such as data-based services and digital business models – made in Europe.'

The EMO Hannover is the ideal platform for Fraunhofer CCIT to show interested industrial partners how to sustainably strengthen competitiveness in their own production.

A central example of future-proof digital infrastructures is the research focus of Fraunhofer CCIT, the Edge Cloud Continuum. It combines the strengths of decentralized edge computing with the possibilities of central cloud solutions, ensuring that data in industrial processes is always processed where it is technically and economically most sensible. In this way, flexible and sovereign data processing is created in connected production environments – from the sensor through the cloud to the use of AI. The Edge Cloud Continuum thus makes a significant contribution to increasing efficiency and advancing digital value chains.

At EMO Hannover, Fraunhofer CCIT presents the application possibilities of the Edge Cloud Continuum for Production (ECC4P) in manufacturing at an interactive multimedia wall. ECC4P shows how modern cloud and edge technologies enable secure and efficient data processing in manufacturing. The focus is on applications from production technology such as milling, drilling, grinding, or forming. ECC4P supports both as a complete system for new plants and in modular form to specifically expand and optimize existing production environments.

In addition to ECC4P, Fraunhofer CCIT presents further applications that illustrate the potential of the Edge Cloud Continuum in production. smartTOOL uses integrated sensors and energy harvesting to monitor processes precisely, wirelessly, and automatically. smartNOTCH enables real-time control of forming processes close to the workpiece, thus ensuring component quality.

'With ECC4P and the complementary applications, we demonstrate how broad the potential of the Edge Cloud Continuum in production is: from tool monitoring to the use of AI directly at the machine. This makes an important contribution to supporting companies on their path to a sovereign and future-proof manufacturing,' explains Michael Fritz.
