Who is FRED?

Turning parts industry relies on online tool for carbon footprint calculation

The Product Carbon Footprint is the metric for the total CO2 emissions of a component. Manufacturers of turned parts also use this value to achieve their sustainability goals. FRED now supports them in the calculation – the online tool identifies the carbon dioxide hotspots within the company.

The Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) indicates how much carbon dioxide a component emits throughout its entire lifecycle – from raw material extraction through manufacturing to disposal. Companies that document this data create transparency. This builds trust with customers, suppliers, and employees. A clear focus on sustainability and CO2 reduction can therefore be a competitive advantage. That is why it makes sense to integrate the PCF into the corporate strategy.

This metric can be determined either manually or with the help of tools such as FRED (Footprint REDuction). This calculator originated from the NOCARBforging 2050 initiative, which was launched by the Industrial Association for Bulk Forming (IMU). What distinguishes this smart helper: It provides tailored PCF calculations specifically for the medium-sized industry. As an additional advantage, FRED maps all essential steps and individual requirements of the various production areas.

Arrived in the supply industry

FRED is already successfully in use at some companies. It is now targeting other industries to make components sustainably future-proof. New industry modules for surface technology, sheet metal forming, turning shops, tool industry, and wire weaving are currently in the onboarding process.

The turned parts industry also benefits from a solution tailored to its needs: 'We support our members in achieving their climate goals and encourage them to work with FRED,' explains Werner Liebmann from the Association of German Turned Parts Industry. 'We are excited about the experiences manufacturers will gather with the new module.' The responsible parties at Maier Precision Technology are already ready to optimize their processes with FRED and make external communication more transparent. 'There are already initial customers asking about the PCF of our components,' says Managing Director Thomas Braun. 'As soon as the new turned parts module is ready for use, we want to incorporate the determined values into our internal environmental management system.' When it comes to sustainability reporting according to the CSRD and CSDDD guidelines, the CO2 calculator is also expected to provide support – with FRED, companies can also calculate the Corporate Carbon Footprint (CCF), i.e., their own CO2 footprint.
