OPTIV S has been developed for demanding measurement tasks on complex and high-quality components in electronics, medical technology, automotive industry, and precision manufacturing. The latest generation of the optical coordinate measuring machine combines advanced image processing measurement technology with tactile and multisensory measurement technologies to increase throughput and simplify testing processes.

"Manufacturers are increasingly under pressure to inspect more parts in shorter time without compromising on accuracy," says Manuel Müller, Director of Product Marketing (Hardware and Software) at Hexagon Manufacturing Intelligence. "OPTIV S has been designed to support quality teams in meeting these demands. The system combines higher measurement speeds and improved precision with intelligent software features that reduce programming effort and facilitate the use of advanced optical measurement technology."

Higher Accuracy and Increased Throughput

The new OPTIV S platform has been fundamentally redesigned to enhance measurement performance and productivity in quality inspection. The volumetric accuracy improves to E0,MPEE = (1.6 + L/200) µm, while the higher travel speeds and acceleration values allow for approximately 30 percent increased machine dynamics. Initial application tests also show a reduction in inspection cycle times by about 15 percent. A vision sensor with a larger field of view also allows for capturing more features with fewer individual images. Together, these improvements enable more efficient inspection of components with high precision – even under demanding production conditions.

Smarter Measurements Thanks to Artificial Intelligence

Additionally, OPTIV S introduces a new generation of intelligent software features in PC-DMIS: They simplify the programming of optical measurements while simultaneously improving the consistency of inspections. The following features will be commercially introduced in 2027:
AI Edge Detection enables users to perform AI-based calibration of camera and lighting to enhance edge detection, reduce programming effort, and achieve more consistent measurement results across different machines and varying component conditions. The commercial launch will occur with PC-DMIS 2026.2.
The Fast Auto-Focus feature provides up to 50 percent faster autofocus performance, further contributing to the reduction of inspection time.
AI Illumination automatically optimizes lighting parameters to enhance edge detection while minimizing manual setup effort and time-consuming trial and error during programming.

With these AI features, the dependency of inspection results on the operator's experience is reduced. At the same time, they enable faster and better reproducible optical inspections in different production environments.

Developed for the Future of Optical Measurement Technology

By combining improved mechanical capabilities and AI-based measurement technologies, OPTIV S helps manufacturers reduce bottlenecks in quality inspection, improve repeatability, and increase confidence in quality data – without complicating existing inspection processes. Together with MAESTRO, Hexagon's new fully digital coordinate measuring machine, OPTIV S expands the company's portfolio of modern inspection solutions. Manufacturers can thus select the appropriate measurement technology for each application while benefiting from the latest developments in hardware and intelligent software.

Many of the new features will also be available for Hexagon's existing OPTIV M platform, such as the PC-DMIS software introduced with OPTIV S and the AI-based measurement functions, including AI Edge Detection, Fast Auto-Focus, and AI Illumination. This way, existing customers also benefit from comparable improvements in programming and consistency of their measurements.

Hexagon's Goal: Intelligent, Autonomous Quality Control

OPTIV S is a direct result of Hexagon's group-wide strategy to integrate AI and automation into the entire measurement technology portfolio. The introduction underscores Hexagon's continuous investments in connecting the physical and digital worlds.

OPTIV S was initially presented in size 4.4.3 starting September 14, 2026, at the trade fairs IMTS in Chicago and AMB in Stuttgart. Further AI-based features, additional sizes, and configurations will be introduced throughout 2027.
