In April 2026, MAPAL added several Z4 length variants to its portfolio, now offering a very wide range for the economical processing of steel, stainless steel, cast iron, or aluminum.
The solid carbide end mills of the OptiMill-HPC-Pocket product family stand for long tool life and high process reliability. This is ensured by a special cutting edge preparation and wear-resistant high-performance coatings. Large chip spaces ensure quick and reliable chip removal, even at high cutting volumes. The innovative tool geometry also contributes by preventing chip clogging and enabling smooth machining with very good surface qualities. The patented plunge end with innovative tip design and integrated drill point opens a wide range of applications for the OptiMill-HPC-Pocket, such as pocket milling, slot milling, plunging, helical milling, and rapid plunging at angles of up to 45° and very high feed rates.
As short as possible, as long as necessary – the OptiMill-Uni-HPC-Pocket for steel and cast materials

With the three-flute variant of the OptiMill-Uni-HPC-Pocket for processing steel and cast iron, MAPAL has been successfully on the market for ten years. The new four-flute variant allows for higher processing speeds thanks to the additional cutting edge. MAPAL combines its proven pocket technology with the experiences of trochoidal milling to quickly process deep cavities.
While Z3 has been available in three different lengths so far, MAPAL is now following up and also offers the four-flute length variants 'short', 'long', and 'extra long'. According to the principle 'as short as possible, as long as necessary', customers can now choose the optimal tool length for their application. With shorter cutting edges and correspondingly lower carbide usage, savings are possible, especially noticeable in high quantities in series production. The shorter variants also have the advantage of enabling faster peripheral machining.
Whether Z3 or Z4 is the better choice depends on the respective application. For applications where the focus is on face machining, MAPAL recommends the three-flute cutter. Its more robust face geometry is advantageous, especially when the cutter is often plunged into the material. The four-flute cutter demonstrates its strengths in peripheral machining. With the fourth cutting edge, the tool is not only faster but also achieves longer tool life.
More reach in aluminum: New length variants for the four-flute cutter
The OptiMill-Alu-HPC-Pocket is the corresponding product line for aluminum processing. Here too, MAPAL has expanded the portfolio and now offers the four-flute variant in 'long' and 'extra long' versions. This allows the tool manufacturer to meet market demands for significantly faster and higher volume work in aluminum.
All-rounder saves tools and optimizes carbide usage
The cutters are standardly available in diameters ranging from 3.80 to 20.00 mm with shank form HB; special radii and shank form HA can be configured. MAPAL also offers tool sets. For maximum process stability, the MillChuck HB is recommended as the tool holder.
With its now completed product family, MAPAL primarily addresses general mechanical engineering as well as mold and die making with the OptiMill-Uni-HPC-Pocket, and with the aluminum variants, also the aerospace sector. In application, the OptiMill-HPC-Pocket is an absolute all-rounder and allows for the saving of two to three other tools. This reduces tool changes and thereby increases productivity. The robust geometry delivers consistent results without fluctuations and enables safe use in automated manufacturing even under suboptimal machining conditions. The extended length options contribute to cost-effectiveness and resource efficiency: users can choose the appropriate overhang lengths for each application – as short as possible, as long as necessary. This reduces carbide usage where cutting length is not needed, while simultaneously increasing rigidity and process stability compared to a universal cutter that must cover all cases.
In summary, the completed OptiMill-HPC-Pocket product family from MAPAL contributes doubly to cost-effectiveness: fewer tools in use and – thanks to demand-oriented length selection – optimized carbide usage. This lowers costs while simultaneously increasing process stability. This combination makes the OptiMill HPC Pocket an attractive solution for both series and flexible manufacturing.
