Comau is participating in the EU project CONVERGING, which aims to advance intelligent and reconfigurable production systems to meet the challenges of modern manufacturing. By integrating collaborative robots, autonomous guided vehicles (AGVs), artificial intelligence, and human operators, CONVERGING aims to create human-centered production systems that can perceive, reason, adapt, collaborate, and innovate. As part of this multifaceted project, Comau has developed two state-of-the-art collaborative robotics solutions, each tailored to a specific industrial challenge.

During the second project review on November 5 at the Teaching Factory Competence Center in Patras (Greece), organized by the Laboratory for Manufacturing Systems and Automation (LMS) of the University of Patras, Comau presented its prototypes developed at the company headquarters in Turin to the project partners and a delegation from the European Commission, consisting of the project manager and two reviewers, in preparation for the testing phase.
The first work package led by Comau involves the design and development of a MyCo collaborative robot (Cobot) with a medium payload, which is used for collaborative post-processing of additively manufactured components and combines human-safe operation with the precision and adaptability required in demanding manufacturing environments.
The second pilot focuses on the aerospace sector, where Comau has developed a collaborative, remotely controlled inspection robot for the non-invasive inspection of aircraft wings – a task traditionally performed manually. Developed within the 'Aeronautics Open Pilot Line' of the CONVERGING project, the innovative solution, based on the 6-axis MyCo Cobot with medium payload, integrates advanced kinematics, high-precision mechanics, and remote control functions to support additive manufacturing and maintenance processes. This increases inspection accuracy and safety, reduces maintenance times, and optimizes the overall lifecycle of aircraft maintenance.
'The CONVERGING project reflects a strategic endeavor to enable next-generation manufacturing through greater reconfigurability, efficiency, and human-centered automation,' explains Nicole Clement, Chief Advanced Automation Solutions Officer at Comau.
'By leveraging our extensive expertise in robotics and industrial automation, as well as our new cobots and AMRs, Comau aims to contribute to the development and introduction of innovative technologies that will redefine the future of manufacturing and maintenance processes.'
