The Fraunhofer Business Unit Vision is hosting the seminar with practical training 'Inspection and Characterization of Surfaces with Image Processing' at Fraunhofer IOSB in Karlsruhe. The seminar imparts expertise on the technology of surface inspection and provides insights into its application possibilities in industrial quality assurance.

Content of the Seminar on Surface Inspection

The surface quality of components and products plays a central role in many industries. Accordingly, the demands for reliable and reproducible testing methods are high. Image processing systems have established themselves as a key technology, as they provide efficient tools that often enable fast 100-percent control and the implementation of zero-defect concepts when integrated into manufacturing. Modern systems allow for the automated detection of defects such as scratches, cracks, pores, inclusions, or contaminants even on colored, patterned, transparent, highly reflective, or mirror-like surfaces. In addition to classical methods for surface inspection, the seminar will cover the description of suitable optics, camera and lighting techniques, including light field technologies, as well as software-based methods for defect classification. Methods of 3D surface measurement technology for characterizing micro and nanostructures on surfaces will also be presented. Participants will gain practical insights into the state of the art, highlighting the possibilities and limitations of relevant methods for industrial applications.

The seminar consists of theory and practice

In the first theoretical part, following an introduction to image acquisition and lighting techniques and the setup of systems for surface inspection, typical methods for capturing and evaluating or analyzing image and measurement data will be presented, along with an overview of practically relevant applications.

In the practical part, various surface inspection systems will be available, where personal experiences can be gained in small groups. In discussions with the practical instructors, individual
questions regarding one's own application, for example based on samples submitted in advance by the participants, can be clarified.
