Order intake in mechanical engineering May 2025

The order intake in May was a pleasant surprise - albeit on a weak year-on-year basis. Overall, companies have recorded a slight increase in orders this year so far, but global uncertainty remains high.

The order intake in the machinery and equipment construction sector in Germany developed positively in May with a real increase of 9 percent

The order intake in the machinery and equipment construction sector in Germany developed positively in May with a real increase of 9 percent. 'However, May of the previous year was an exceptionally weak order month, making the comparison base correspondingly low,' says VDMA Chief Economist Dr. Johannes Gernandt. Domestic business was able to increase by 2 percent, while orders from abroad rose by 12 percent in May.

For the first five months of the current year, there is a slight order increase of a total of 3 percent in the books, driven by a 4 percent increase in foreign business while domestic orders remained unchanged. 'This development confirms our slight optimism for the second half of the year. The order situation supports our production forecast of a real minus 2 percent for the year 2025. Global uncertainty remains high. It is all the more important that the EU quickly agrees with the USA on an end to the ongoing trade disputes and that there are no further escalations,' emphasizes the VDMA Chief Economist.

In the less volatile three-month period from March to May, companies recorded an order increase of a real 2 percent compared to the previous year. Domestic business (minus 1 percent) was still slightly below the previous year's value, while foreign business was able to grow (plus 4 percent). Eurozone countries ordered 23 percent more machines and equipment during this period, while non-Eurozone countries placed 3 percent fewer orders.
