In the past three years, the business areas of Plansee and CERATIZIT have taken significant steps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through a wide range of measures. "Overall, we have been able to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions by more than 20 percent compared to the base year 2020 on our own," explains Dr. Andreas Lackner, a member of the Executive Board of the Plansee Group.
Currently unavoidable greenhouse gas emissions in our own operations (Scope 1 and 2), projected to be 78 kilotons CO2e for the current business year 2025/26, will be voluntarily offset by certified projects in the USA and India starting March 1, 2025.
CO₂ Reduction on Our Own
Measures already taken to reduce greenhouse gas emissions include sourcing electricity from renewable sources at all major locations of Plansee and CERATIZIT worldwide, as well as intensifying the recycling of used materials, with a recycling rate of 90 percent for tungsten. Further measures aim to reduce energy consumption in production, install electrolyzers for hydrogen production, increase the use of process heat, and recycle hydrogen. "We also have ambitious plans for the coming years to further reduce our CO₂ footprint on our own and thus gradually decrease the impact of our production on the environment," says Lackner. Additionally, Plansee and CERATIZIT will hold suppliers more accountable. "About 70 percent of our greenhouse gas emissions are caused by purchased products and services – here we are actively seeking solutions together with our suppliers to reduce these emissions."
High Requirements for Offset Certificates
The Plansee Group places high demands on the quality of certificates for offsetting currently unavoidable greenhouse gas emissions in Scope 1 and 2. As a globally producing company, the Plansee Group aims to realize offset projects near larger production sites. This includes a forest conservation project in Pennsylvania, USA, in close proximity to the group's largest production site in Towanda. The second project is near the production sites in Mysore and Bangalore, India, where the production of solar power is supported. Both projects are long-term oriented. They are monitored by internationally recognized certification bodies (ACR and Verra) based on the currently highest standards (ICVCM), supplemented by internal audits. In Europe, the Plansee Group is still in the selection phase for suitable offset projects.
Long-Term Plan for Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions
The business areas of the Plansee Group pursue individual goals for the gradual reduction of their CO₂ footprint: The Plansee business area has set a voluntary target to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in Scope 1, 2, and 3 by 90 percent by the business year 2050, based on the base year. The CERATIZIT business area commits to achieving this goal by the business year 2040.
