The study sponsorship award donated by the Association of German Tool and Mould Makers has been awarded for the fifth time to graduates of the Schmalkalden University of Applied Sciences and is endowed with 2000 euros. "The VDWF sponsorship award honors the achievements of young talents who not only advance our industry with their work but also help to raise its significance in the public consciousness. Research and innovation need visibility – and that is exactly what we promote," explains Prof. Thomas Seul, Vice President for Research and Transfer at the university and President of the association. This year's award winner is Julian Gundelwein, who was recognized for his master's thesis graded 1.0.

In 2021, Gundelwein already received the VDWF Promotion Award for his bachelor's thesis. In his now-awarded master's thesis, he analyzed the flow field in a chamber air furnace in collaboration with the industrial furnace manufacturer Caldatrac from Höchheim. Based on simulations, he calculated a three-dimensional model that enabled him to perform a detailed flow analysis. He subsequently validated his method through measurement runs on the actual system.

In his report, Prof. Robert Pietzsch emphasized that Gundelwein succeeded in 'drastically reducing complexity and computational effort through purposeful adjustments and simplifications, without compromising the precision and significance of the calculation results.' He also praised Gundelwein's 'creative, efficient, and independent working style.'

Ceremonial award in the Audimax of the university

The award ceremony for the promotion award took place during the New Year's reception of the Schmalkalden University of Applied Sciences. The program, framed by jazz music, included greetings from University President Prof. Gundolf Baier and Mayor Thomas Kaminski. The keynote speech was given by Carsten Schneider, State Minister at the Federal Chancellery and Federal Government Commissioner for East Germany. Claudia Michel from the Schmalkalden VDWF team then delivered the laudation for Julian Gundelwein before handing the stage to Prof. Thomas Seul for the official presentation of the award.
